Composite Surfboard Construction

Super Natural Grey

Created for high performance surfing, Supernatural construction adds strategic and precise board flex, as well as a very high level of durability.

We utilise a proprietary construction process that is exclusive to our brand and factory. Incorporating the latest low toxicity bio-based resins, and sustainably produced skin and rail timber, our surfboards are an order of magnitude less toxic to produce than conventional PU boards.

The result is a board that is significantly lighter and stronger, whilst having one of the lowest carbon footprints of any commercially available surfboard.

Inner Core foam

Hydrophobic EPS foam (24kg/CBM) is used for the core of most models. It exhibits a lot of flexural strength, and is lighter than PU – a perfect core for compositing. Any dings that occur don’t absorb great amounts of water, so you are back in the lineup faster. High density PVC inserts are utilised where needed.

Skin and Rail Wood

Sustainably grown Paulownia is used for all our skins. It is the ideal timber for surfboard construction, as it is dimensionally stable and resists splitting or warping. The waxy cell structure also resists water penetration. Paulownia has the highest strength to weight ratio of any hardwood, and exhibits a beautiful blond grain when laminated with epoxy. The deck and hull skins are extremely light and flexible as a result.

Paulownia Stringers

Paulownia Stringers are used at the perimeter of our boards, where you can generate the greatest spring and pop. This means bigger air, more speed and greater drive – an overall freer and more lively riding experience. Nose and Tail blocks are added to completely enclose the perimeter, creating a flexible frame around the foam core as well as providing increased protection to those areas.

Limited Fibreglass

The increased stability and strength of the timber rails and skins, means that we can use a lot less fibreglass in the construction.

Resin

We use Entropy bio ‘Super Sap One’ epoxy resin – a high bio content resin with low toxicity. It is strong and light, which makes it great for laminating and filling.

The manufacturer states: “The raw materials going into our resins are co‐products or waste products of other industrially important processes. These resins take a crucial step towards lowering our impact on the environment.

By employing green chemistry techniques that require less energy and produce less harmful byproducts, we reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from production of our resins by 33% over conventional petroleum based epoxies.”

Finishing Materials

For our logo art we use an older style printing system that sits under glass, uses only a UV rated latex emulsion and a paper print. We use no paint or silk screen inks, which further reduces toxicity and the overall carbon footprint. For UV protection, a low VOC 2k treatment is used, finishing with matte hand rubbed finish.

Our Super Natural construction exhibits the highest strength to weight ratio of any surfboard on the market, and the weight advantages increase significantly as the board gets longer.

How They Surf

We understand that the most important aspect of any surfboard is how it surfs.

All our boards are shaped and constructed primarily for high performance surfing. They feel extremely lively and responsive underfoot, with great positive floatation characteristics. They also look amazing, with the exposed wood grain.

They really are works of high performance art.

We know you will be as stoked as we are once you get one of these boards under your feet.
